500th Anniversary of Count Peter-Ernest von Mansfeld

Luxembourg – Peter-Ernst von Mansfeld was Governor of Luxembourg from 1545 to 1604 by order of the Spanish crown. At the age of 18 Mansfeld entered the service of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1563 Mansfeld began building his noble residence in Clausen, in front of the walls of Luxembourg City. In the decades that followed, magnificent gardens with large water features, aviaries, fountains and castle grounds decorated with fine works of art were created over the eight hectares of land. Mansfeld died on 26 May 1604 in his castle in Luxembourg-Clausen.
