Spain – On December 11, 1946, by decision of the UN General Assembly, UNICEF was born with the objective of bringing humanitarian aid and hope to children around the world whose lives are at risk from conflicts, crises, poverty or inequality.

At the end of World War II, Europe was desolate and children, the most vulnerable, went hungry and cold in many corners of Europe.

UNICEF was then called the United Nations Relief and Reconstruction Administration (UNRRA), although they were colloquially known as “the world’s dairymen” as they provided milk to millions of children.

It is 70 years since its creation but this celebration has a bittersweet tone. When UNRRA was created seven decades ago, its members did not think that its existence would come to this day, because they hoped that those needs that they covered would disappear soon.

Unfortunately, today, the multiple conflicts in the world such as Syria, the effects of natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes or floods, famine, epidemics and other vicissitudes continue to affect in a brutal way, above all, the smallest inhabitants of this planet.

But also, fortunately, UNICEF continues to exist and has become the salvation for many of the people living in disadvantaged situations. Today it continues to carry out an urgent and universal work.

Although there is still a long way to go, it should not be forgotten that over the last 25 years, more than half of child deaths have been reduced due to preventable causes before the age of five, and since 1990, the rate of school-age children who do not go to school or receive any education has fallen by 40%.

The self-adhesive stamp that Correos dedicates to this event, shows the mission of UNICEF against the suffering of children represented by the united hands of several children, along with children’s drawings and the logo of this institution.
