The series Personalities of this year pays homage to one of the most outstanding personalities of the second half of the twentieth century of the Principality of Andorra: Julià Reig i Ribó. Businessman, banker and politician of great relevance for the Principality by promoting its progress and modernization.

He was General Councilor of the Valls d’Andorra between 1948 and 1959 and twice elected Sindic General, the first between 1960-1966 and the second between 1960 and 1978. During his term promoted the creation of Social Security and the opening Of the country to the outside, besides impelling the political and social reforms that would end up in the first Constitution of the Principality of Andorra in the year 1993.

In his business life, he continued with the family business Tabacs Reig, a company founded in 1880 by his grandfather Rafael Reig Sans.

Subsequently, he founded Banca Reig, aimed at financing the country’s business activity. In 2001 the Bank merged with Banc Agrícol i Comercial d’Andorra, which would give rise, one year later, to the founding of the new Andorra Banc Grup Agrícol Reig bank, which operates under the brand name Andbank worldwide.

The legacy Julià Reig lives in the foundation that bears his name, an institution that understood as “the lace of an entrepreneur in the community and the society in which he develops his activity”, a spirit that inspires his successors by encouraging and sponsoring those initiatives that , Arising from Andorran society, serve the general interest.
