Estonia – There is a quiet snowfall on Christmas Eve. The moon is bright and stars are shining up high. A couple of bullfinches are snuggled up on the window sill. The children have just finished building a snowman and have returned home to warm up and bake gingerbread cookies with their mother.

The house is filled with the wonderful scent of spruce and cinnamon. There is a fire in the fireplace and one can hear the chimes of an old grandfather clock. As always, Santa Claus has been busy, because kids across the world are eagerly awaiting presents and Santa needs to visit all of their homes in just one night. Children keep peeking out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of the familiar red hat. It is getting darker and darker outside.

People stay inside playing board games and eating gingerbread cookies. The air is thick with anticipation. Suddenly, a familiar figure emerges from the distance. The snowman is first to get his present, Santa then decorates the spruce and heads towards the house. Knock-knock! Time stands still. The kids are silent in awe as Santa steps inside. Everyone reads poems, people sing and dance together. The room is filled with the rustle of gift wrappers. Times flies and pretty soon Santa gets up to say goodbye, he has many other families to visit as well.

Maybe we’ll meet again next year.

Merry Christmas!
